Image by yufujamar via FlickrHave you ever seen one of those futuristic sci-fi movies where everyone seems to have their own kind of personal transport available? You know the kind; the ones with all those levitating personal mobility gadgets? Well, those are probably still a long way away. However, the age of the personal mobility vehicles is approaching, and who would have thought that General Motors would be a part of that? The GM/Segway P.U.M.A is quite possibly about to spur the equivalent of an arms race in cheap personal mobility vehicles, and consumers stand to benefit.
You see, when walking off of the campus of Davis & Elkins college today a thought struck me. I could easily imagine the students going back and forth across campus being guided by devices designed by segway. Whether it was the personal segway device itself, or the recently prototyped P.U.M.A it wasn't difficult to imagine that these small, highly unique, vehicles are poised not just to take "urban" environments by storm but to take over college campuses and small towns where cost is always an issue.
That vision makes me curious about the possibilities. Why not offer segways and P.U.M.A devices at discounted rates to college students as a promotional deal? Students need a way to get around and in today's world — where college tuition is outpacing inflation — that is economical, reasonable, and safe. Think about the benefits: no gas, no bills, the insurance is probably going to be minimal (if there is any). For students that are paying their own way through college that kind of vehicle is a dream come true; I'd also bet the same is true for parents of students who aren't putting themselves through college. For the increasing population of green-thinking college students in the world these kinds of vehicles would be a smash hit.
Of course, I'm making a few assumptions here. I'm assuming the vehicle will be cheaper than a used car; that it will contain enough electronics to make it usable year round (heat, A/C) — yet still be able to maintain a charge; and that it will be promoted properly. I'm also assuming that budget consciousness and availability will surpass the innate desire we have to drive gas hogs that can transport eight to ten people to wherever we want to go.
I'm sure that it's easy for you to think of applications for these vehicles that I haven't even touched on. No doubt the creative juices in your mind are flowing right now — thinking of the next great way that these vehicles could change the world; whether it's the elimination of the inefficient gas guzzlers used in foreign countries, or the possibility to rent these vehicles for a short outing, you no doubt have thought about how these can impact the world outside of just the urban markets and college campuses. Maybe you're already thinking about ways to improve these vehicles, or just "trick them out" to do things other than what they might have been intended to do. But, in my opinion, the idea that these thoughts are possibly occurring in your mind right now should be a clear sign that we're on the doorstep of great advances — that the future is now.
